Is the mandolin as an instrument girl in the U.S.?

I've seen it three times singing duets at the park on which man plays guitar and Women's mandolin. In addition there was also an episode of Family Guy: Peter plays guitar, mandolin, Lois. I ask because I was thinking of leaving my nephew a mandolin for Christmas, and I do not want to be like the time it was a Barbie and her sister a toy truck. I am sure that Italy would consider this stupid question. But there is a final gendering of instruments in the United States: the flute, for instance, it is definitely an instrument of a girl, and even in college is at least a simple majority of flute students are women.

No. .. In fact, I've never heard of being most appropriate instruments for one gender over another. It's probably just a coincidence, they are getting the connections are not there. My grandfather (among many other instruments) could play a marvel. The only thing about the mandoline is that it is so common in most areas in the U.S., but that's not a bad thing? It is not the same as receiving a child instead of a barbie truck. A mandolin is perfectly fine, all the time you want to learn. That's what you should worry about whether its not appropriate for a child, it is.
